Chapel Attendance Policy

Chapel Attendance Policy

Each student must present his or her student ID at every Chapel which will be scanned by Chapel personnel for attendance tracking. Students may present only their own ID card upon entering Chapel. Any student arriving more than 10 minutes past the starting time will not receive credit for that Chapel. Likewise, any student leaving prior to Chapel’s dismissal will not receive credit. In order to receive a grade of "pass," a student must attend the minimum number of Chapel programs as indicated:

Day Hours Enrolled Attendance Requirement
12 or more hours 15
7-11 10
6 and under   5

This academic year full-time, day students have some flexibility in meeting their chapel requirements. When combined with CREW hours, the "Spiritual Life Hour" requirement can be met in any number combination equaling 30, as long as each category has a minimum of 5 hours. For example, a person can complete 10 CREW service hours and attend 20 chapels (or vice versa) to meet the expectation for both CREW and chapel attendance.

(For more information, see Spiritual Life Hours under CREW Ministries for Current Students.)

Students will receive a grade at the end of Fall and Spring semesters for their Chapel attendance. Chapel is graded on a "pass/fail" basis. Students attending less than the minimum number required will receive a "fail" on their grade report. Students may convert this "fail" grade to a "pass" if they make up the number of missed chapels during the following semester of enrollment. Students should keep in mind that a significant number of absences in a term will be very difficult (if not impossible) to make up the succeeding term, and that all Chapel credits earned must first be applied toward the requirement for the current semester.

Chapel probation and suspension are administered as follows:

Students who attend the required number of Chapel programs in a semester receive a grade of "pass."

Students who fail to achieve the required number of Chapel programs receive a grade of "fail." Students who make up the balance of the required Chapels during the next semester will have their grade changed to "pass." However, credits toward a prior semester’s grade of "fail" will only be credited after the current semester’s requirement has been met. Students who do not (or cannot) make up this deficiency in the next ensuing semester retain the "fail" grade permanently.

Students who accumulate two semesters of "fail" will be placed on Chapel probation.

Students who accumulate three semesters of "fail" will be suspended for a period of at least one semester (not including summer). Students re-entering the college after a semester on Chapel suspension will be admitted only on probationary status. Failure to meet the Chapel requirement during this semester of probation will result in suspension once again, while students meeting the requirement will be restored to "good standing" in Chapel.

It is your responsibility to monitor your attendance. In order to assist you, reports will be distributed in the course of each semester.

Because we have approximately 48 opportunities scheduled for Chapel credit each year, no individual absences will be excused. Students must take into account unforeseen circumstances when planning for the required number of Chapel credits each semester. These opportunities are listed and updated on the Chapel schedule found on the this website.

Chapel Exemptions

Exemptions may be granted to students under rare circumstances. Students must obtain a Request for Chapel Exemption form from the Office of Student Development during the scheduled add/drop period at the beginning of each semester. This form must be returned by the add/drop deadline. Late requests will not be considered. All requests will be reviewed by the Chapel Appeals Committee who will review the information provided and rule on whether an exemption will be given.
