Chapel Policies

Chapels are an integral part of the learning process at Crichton College, maintaining harmony with the institutional mission of the college to develop a Christian world view and personal evangelical faith while gaining a broad understanding of the arts and sciences. Chapels are designed to reflect important elements of a Christian college experience, and seek to provide an opportunity for:

1. Dependence upon God.

2. Spiritual Formation, offering opportunities for God to shape the lives of those in the college community.

3. Cultural Engagement, challenging students to examine and apply classroom learning to all of life.

4. Community, enhancing a sense of belonging to the Crichton body.

Crichton College seeks to provide a balanced program for students, faculty,
and staff. We recognize that certain Chapels may be of more interest for some students than others. Regardless of the speaker or topic, Chapel is viewed as an integral part of the Christian college experience.

Chapel is held once each week on Wednesday from 10:00 to 10:50a.m. in the Iles Auditorium. Other opportunities also are available each semester at other times and locations for which Chapel credit can be received, making approximately 24 opportunities for receiving Chapel credit each semester.

A Chapel schedule will be published on the website each semester listing regular and alternative Chapel experiences. In an effort to accommodate varied types of Chapel experiences and programs, it may be necessary to change the location of Chapel on an occasional basis. Such changes will be publicized with as much advance notice as possible.

Chapel attendance is required for all students with the exception of those taking classes exclusively at night, or in certain special programs. Semester Chapel credit is determined on a pass/fail basis, with the specific requirement determined by the number of day hours in which the student is enrolled at the expiration of the "add/drop" period for each semester. Students who withdraw from a class after the official add/drop period has concluded are still considered for Chapel purposes to be carrying their original load, and thus will be responsible for the Chapel requirement determined at the expiration of the add/drop period.

Satisfactory fulfillment of Chapel credit is a non-academic requirement for graduation from Crichton College. Any student failing to maintain "good standing" in Chapel will be deemed not to have completed all degree requirements and thus be ineligible either to participate in graduation ceremonies or to receive a degree unless restored to "good standing."Sanctions up to and including probation and suspension from the college are incurred for multiple deficient semesters.

Please note that food, drink, and studying are not permitted in Chapel.
