Hot Spot Groups

Faculty, are you looking for a way to encourage your students to engage in class material outside of class meetings and homework assignments? Students, would you like to help your peers in courses that you really enjoyed? The Office of Student Success (OSS) would like to make you an offer. We would like to start Hot Spot Groups for those of you who are interested. Here is how it works:

Faculty: If you are a faculty member, think about a student who has done well in your class before. When you see this student on campus ask him or her if they would be willing to lead a study group for your class or forward their name to the OSS to be contacted. Send this student to the OSS. We will get them to fill out an application for becoming a tutor, take them to financial aid to make arrangements to become a student worker, and provide a tutor orientation.

Student: If you are a student who really enjoyed and did well in a certain professor’s class, ask the professor if they would like to have a hot spot group for their class. The qualifications for a student to be a peer tutor are:

1. The student must have completed 30 hours of college level work.
2. The student must have a 3.0 GPA.
3. The student must be recommended by a faculty member.
4. Peer tutors must have earned at least a “B” in any class they wish to lead a hot spot group for.

To apply to be a student tutor, click here for an application and here for a reference form to be completed by two faculty members.
