Comets Lose in Final Home Game

Memphis TN – February 16, 2006 - Crichton College lost their final regular season home game in disappointing fashion Thursday night to Martin Methodist College. The Comets trailed the majority of the first half and could not find their rhythm. Late in the first half Crichton managed to build a small lead and went into the locker room on a 10-4 run and a 36-34 halftime lead. Crichton gave up 10 points off 11 turnovers in the  first half and went 0-5 from behind the arc.

In the second half Crichton had more success and were able to hold their lead for all but about three combined minutes. The Comets went on a 10-4 run to start the half but were never able to pull away and the Redhawks continued to hang around. Martin went on a 22-11 run of their own to take the lead with just over eight minutes to play. Crichton would quickly regain the lead and hold it until a three point field goal by Jarvis Young, off one of 25 Crichton turnovers, gave Martin a momentary lead. The Comets would again retake the lead and looked to be in control when the Redhawks turned the ball over after two Jonathan Loe free throws with less than a minute remaining. The Comets had the ball and the lead but would give it back to Martin on yet another turnover. Martin tied the game on the next possession with a Deon Moore basket. Crichton failed to convert on the next possession, giving the Redhawks the ball with 12 seconds remaining. After a Martin Methodist time out Cedric Williams subbed into the game for Martin and would become the hero, dropping a five foot turnaround to knock off the number one team in the Conference and give Martin only their second Conference win. Crichton falls to 7-3 in the Conference and will need to win out and get some help to win the regular season Conference championship.

Jonathan Loe led four Comets in double figures with 15. DeShawn Danzey recorded his eleventh double double with 10 points and 16 rebounds while Derek Boykin and Reggie Gaddis scored 10 and 12 respectively. Deon Moorer led the way for the Redhawks with 22 points in 40 minutes of play. Cedric Williams scored 17 including the game winner as time expired.

Final Score: Crichton 74 - Martin Methodist 76

Player of the Game: DeShawn Danzey

Next up the Comets travel to Lebonon TN to face Cumberland University. The game is scheduled for 8:00 PM on Thursday February 23.
