TN – February 23, 2006 - Crichton
College held on to beat Cumberland University Thursday
night in a game that could be titled the tale of two
halves. The first half belonged to Crichton who reeled
off 14 unanswered points to start the game. Cumberland
cut the lead to 9 but could not get any closer as the
Comets built a first half lead of as many as 16.
Crichton went into the locker room up 13 by the score of
42-13. Crichton forced 12 turnovers in the half while
only committing 5 of their own, scored 34 points in the
paint and registered 14 points off turnovers.
The
second half however was a different story. Crichton
struggled to keep their lead and repeatedly shot
themselves in the foot with turnovers missed lay ups and
fouls. The Comets lead of 16 dwindled down to as low as
one largely because of costly Comet errors. Crichton
would go 0-7 from behind the arc in the half and were
beat in nearly every statistical category. The Comets
committed 12 turnovers to only 2 assist giving up 18
points off the turnovers. Crichton only forced 5 bulldog
turnovers in the half and were only able to turn those
into 4 points. With the play as bad as it was the Comets
found a way to win. With the game in jepordy of falling
into the hands of the Bulldogs with less than a minute
to play, Melvin Wilkes came up with a steal that led to
a DeShawn Danzey dunk putting the Comets back in
control. Crichton made their free throws down the
stretch to seal the deal and pick up their 18th win of
the season, 8th conference win and 11th win coming away
from home.
Derek
Boykin was big for Crichton scoring 14 points pulling
down 5 boards dishing out 4 assist and picking up 2
steals in the win. Jonathan Loe scored 13 for the Comets
and DeShawn Danzey rounded out he double figure scoring
with 12. Janis Ivanovskis scored 18 points and pulled
down 18 boards in the loss for Cumberland. Ivanovskis
scored 16 of his 18 in the second half. Crichton went a
paltry 2-21 from behind the arc, but managed to out
rebound Cumberland by 13.
