Comets Take Tournament Title

Memphis, TN – March 6, 2007 - Crichton College's # 10 ranked Men's basketball team completed the clean sweep of the TranSouth Conference tonight. The Comets were awarded both the regular season and conference tournament championship banners tonight as they knocked off Union University in front of a capacity crowd at Streets Athletic Complex. The game had many lead changes, but neither team could pull away . However, the Comets did jump on the Bulldogs early with a double digit lead in the first half. Union then cut the lead to single digits by getting offensive put backs and keeping the ball inside. The exciting first half came to an end with the Comets up 41-36.

The second half would be a dog fight like the first. Crichton let Union take the lead in the second half, but the lead never reached double digits. The Comets would retake the lead at 61-60 and both teams traded baskets throughout the rest of the game. With seven seconds to go the Comets found themselves down 78-76. Coach Walker put the ball in the hands of his experienced and clutch point guard Melvin Wilkes. Wilkes hit one of the biggest shots in his career as he drove the length of the floor for a game tying lay-up to send the championship game to overtime. In overtime, the Comets jumped out to a seven point lead and with a Deshawn Danzey dunk they would never look back. Union pulled within two, but that would not be enough as the Comets finished off Union 89-85 in overtime. One thing this game proved is that the 2006-2007 Comets refused to back down from any opponent. Under the senior leadership of Wilkes and Danzey, this team will hang its first championship basketball banners in school history.

The Comets had three score in double figures. Leading Crichton once again, was Stanley Brownlee with 24 points and 8 rebounds. Senior DeShawn Danzey added 22 points in the last home game of his career. Watkins also added 16 pts in the victory. Melvin Wilkes seemed to be the game changing player as he registered 9 pts, 9 reb., and 12 assists in his last home game. Crichton will now put their talent to the test as they join 31 other teams from around the country in the NAIA National Tournament next week in Kansas City, MO.
