Comets Pull Out a 19 Point Victory at Home

Memphis, TN – December 14, 2006 - Crichton College's #25 ranked Men's basketball team continued their winning streak Thursday with a win at home against William Carey College. The game featured two nationally ranked teams with Crichton sitting at 25 and William Carey receiving votes in the latest poll. The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead only to see it slip away on a basket by Zarko Brankovic. Brankovic's three with 17:09 remaining in the half gave the Comets their first lead, a lead that they would not let go. Crichton pushed their lead to as many as 12 and went into the locker room up 10.

 

The second half saw the Comets pick up where they left off and build on their double digit lead. William Carey cut the lead to 9 on one occasion but the Comets lead by at least 10 points for 19 of the 20 second half minutes. With just under 1 minute remaining Crichton enjoyed their largest lead of 21 as excellent free throw shooting down the stretch put the game out of reach. As a team the Comets shot 100% from the free throw line including 10 for 10 in the second half. As the final buzzer sounded, Crichton picked up their seventh win in a row and avenged a earlier loss at William Carey. 

 

Sylvania Watkins lead 5 Comets in double figures with 18. Stanley Brownlee (16) Derek Boykin (16) Zarko Brankovic (15) and Deshawn Danzey (10) rounded out the double figure scoring for Crichton. Stanley Brownlee and Derek Boykin filled the box score with positive stats as Brownlee added 8 rebounds 2 assist and 2 steals to go with his 16 points and Boykin added 8 assist 2 steal and 4 rebounds to his 16. Melvin Wilkes continued to rack up assist, adding 8 to his league and national leading total. Crichton point guards Melvin Wilkes and Derek Boykin combined for a 16 to 4 assist to turnover ratio. Freshman guard Zarko Brankovic enjoyed his best shooting night of the season as he connected on 5 three point baskets. Jarekus Singleton lead the way for William Carey with 21.
