The
inaugural season for the Crichton Comets Women’s Soccer
Team came to a close last Wednesday with a loss to
Martin Methodist College, ending the most prestigious
run ever made by a first-year TranSouth Conference or
Region XI team.
The
Lady Comets, on a tie-breaker loss for the third seed in
the conference tournament, came up against the number 3
ranked NAIA powerhouse, Martin Methodist College.
Knowing that a win was necessary to continue their
season, the young Crichton squad came out firing and did
not back down to the mighty Redhawk squad. Although
there was no question which team possessed the majority
of the play, the Comets came out deservedly only down
1-0 at the half, on a questionable penalty shot.
However,
early in the second half, the Redhawks were awarded
another penalty, and from there the wheels fell of on
the first-year Comet squad. Martin Methodist rolled to
an easy 8-0 victory. The Lady Redhawks would then go on
to beat Cumberland 4-0 to win the TranSouth Conference
Tournament for the second year in a row. Player of the
Match for the Comets went to a goalkeeper for the first
time this year, as Sarah Harrison put on a display in
goal for Crichton.
This
marked the close to the inaugural season for the Comets,
but not before making a run never seen by a TranSouth
Conference or Region XI team. Crichton finishes the
season 4-9-2, posting a 3-3 record in the TranSouth.
Victories included a 2-1 win over last year’s number 4
seed in the conference Freed Hardeman University and an
astounding 2-1 win over 2004’s Region XI #6 seed,
Campbellsville University. But the Lady Comets made
post-season history as well.
The
Comets participation in the TranSouth Conference
tournament marks the first time in conference history
that a women’s team has ever made the tournament as a
first year squad. The Comets almost added to that
amazing accomplishment by almost qualifying for the
Region XI tournament on LONGO points, something no first
year team has ever come close to. The Lady Comets
missed out on the 6th seed by less than two
points to Lambuth University. That equates to
essentially one goal in just about any game this season,
would have pushed the Comets to the regional
tournament. Not only did the team have success, but
individuals set records as well.
Tiffany
Genovese, who was named to the TranSouth All-Conference
team, awaits to hear if she will be named to the
All-Region and All-American squad, due out November 9th.
During this run that gave Crichton College its first
TranSouth All-Conference member, Genovese led the Comets
in all but one offensive category.
The
Lady Comets will look to build on their amazing success
as they move forward toward the 2006 season.
