A substantial number of elective hours are included in this degree program to enable students to individualize their program of study.
Students who have completed an appropriate baccalaureate or Master’s degree and seek Tennessee licensure in one of the approved basic/initial areas may be admitted to the Teacher Education Program, assuming they meet all program admission requirements. Requirements for Post-Degree students are found in a later section. Also, add-on-endorsements may be pursued by students who have a degree and licensure to teach in one or more areas, and who wish to acquire an additional specialty. All programs of study and coursework delivered by the Department of Education are at the undergraduate level. At the present time, the Department does not offer any graduate courses or programs.
Licensure Programs (Non-Degree)
REQUIREMENTS FOR POST-DEGREE STUDENTS
The Crichton College Teacher Education Program is designed and delivered as an undergraduate program. Individuals seeking to change careers and/or desiring to become teachers -- who have earned baccalaureate or Master’s degrees from regionally accredited institutions of higher education -- may submit formal application for admission to the TEP. These students may opt to pursue a second baccalaureate degree or seek licensure only. This is not a Master’s degree program, and all credits earned are at the undergraduate level.
Expectations for post-degree students are the same as for undergraduate students. The knowledge, skills, and dispositions required in general education, pre-professional education, professional education, and teaching fields are documented through an analysis of transcripts and other supporting documents. A program of study is generated as a consequence of this analysis.
Post-degree students may pursue their programs of study through completion of coursework offered during daytime hours or in the evening.Add-on endorsement opportunities are available to teachers having baccalaureate or Master’s degrees and regular teaching licenses who wish to add additional endorsements (teaching fields) to their current licenses. Completion of the appropriate coursework enables teachers to extend their licenses. Teachers seeking add-on endorsements are not required to make application for admission to the Teacher Education Program.
Individuals must meet Tennessee and institutional requirements for any endorsement in terms of knowledge, skills, and dispositions; classroom field experiences; and specialty test(s) before they may be recommended for an add-on endorsement. The State of Tennessee requires that add-on endorsement seekers pass the appropriate Praxis II test.
Add-on endorsements are offered in the following areas: Elementary Education (Grades K-6), Middle Grades Education (Grades 4-8), and Secondary School Fields (Grades 7-12) in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Mathematics, Psychology. Check with the Department of Education to learn specific requirements for each add-on endorsement area.
This is not a Master’s degree program; all credits earned are undergraduate hours.
